The Bluest Water in Mexico: Bacalar Lagoon
This STUNNING location is literally known as the “Maldives of Central America” and TRUST ME, it will NOT disappoint.
You can see this beautiful location on our tiktok: Bacalar Lagoon.
This 30+ mile stretch of beautiful clear water is called Bacalar Lagoon, but its second name
is “Laguna de los Siete Colores” which means lagoon of seven colors.
This name is super fitting because as you travel down the
waters of the lagoon, you will literally find seven different hues of blue. It
is truly remarkable!
Professional divers go to the depths of the various cenotes
that are located throughout the lagoon. The depths can reach up to 180ft!!
Now, of course, you want to go see for yourself, right?!
Let’s talk about the best ways that you can reach this
bucket list destination…
While Bacalar is a 2.5 hour drive from Tulum and a 5 hour
drive from Cancun, this destination can really be a trip in itself if you want
to stay in the Bacalar area.
The closest city to Bacalar is called Chetumal which has the
Chetumal International Airport. (You will most likely need a connecting flight
to get to this airport.) Then, Bacalar is a short 45-minute drive from this city.
The final option that I will explain in this blog post is the one that we opted to do. We took a cruise that stopped in Costa Maya, Mexico which is near the town of Mahahual. Plenty of cruises go to this port and offer excursions to the Bacalar Lagoon. It is a little over an hour drive from the port to Bacalar.
We were able to spend a full day on the lagoon, go rafting and paddle boarding, eat local Mexican food, jump off the dock, and swim in the crystal-clear water.
It was an AMAZING experience, and we will definitely be returning for a longer stay on the lagoon!!Thanks for reading along! Stay tuned for more info about our cruise to Central America!
